"Moon Maid" Ad

What looked like a sort of rival Moon Maid in what must have been the same general period appeared in an advertising campaign for a line of men's clothing

.

In the ad itself, she is called both "The Hardwick Maid"

And a "Moon-Maid".

Previous Hardwick ads had used the term "Hardwick Knight" ( otherwise without much of an indication of knighthood* ), and "Hardwick Maid".

So the "Moon Maid" angle was a variation of their exsisting ad campaign.

*And I think the idea was that the "Knight" was supposed to be like the character of John Steed on the television program THE AVENGERS.

Phooey On Phoonga

An early science fiction story by Ross Andru ( later of Andru and Esposito fame ),  originally published in UNCANNY TALES #15 in 1953. With that date, I think it might have been done because of THE WAR OF THE WORLDS movie that came out that year.

Although Timely/Marvel/Atlas had already done a couple of different Captain America stories on the War Of The Worlds theme even before this.

Yahoo News Says Obama Born In Africa

They're calling it an accident, but yahoo news said that Obama was born in Africa. Of course, the story has been in the news before, it's just that some people have been disputing it.

Reblogged from http://www.reagancoalition.com/articles/2013/20130625005-yahoo-kenya-bo.html

Here is the picture of the sign in Kenya we've seen before.

And here is a screen capture of the yahoo news item which says Obama was born in Africa,

they highlighted the exact place where it says that.

Moon Maid Contest, Part II

More on the Moon Maid contest.

Actually the final outcome of the contest doesn't seem to be known for certain at this point. But-

I found a little more about the Moon Maid contest they had in connection with the Dick Tracy comic strip at  http://www.libraryofamericancomics.com/blog/2013-05/  . It seems that was the last major promotion they had for the strip, in 1964. Moon Maid had actually been introduced in the later part of 1963 and was an immediate sensation, although later commentaries frequently claim that the comics are not well thought of today. Something which I think they keep repeating as much as anything because that's the way they want it to be.

The introduction of Moon Maid in Dick Tracy comics.

This also appears to be the same girl.

A contest announcement.

Any movie or television roles the winner might have gotten after the contest don't seem to be known for certain at this point, either. Some movie stars did become famous after winning beauty contests.

The same site makes a reference to plans to reprint the Dick Tracy comics from this period in the future, which would make it easier for readers to decide for themselves whether they like them or not.

DICK TRACY IN B FLAT

DICK TRACY IN B FLAT was a radio program that was broadcast to troops overseas in February 15, 1945, on "Command Performance", program was broadcast to troops overseas.

The All-Star Cast included :
  • Bing Crosby as the virtous and unflappable Dick Tracy
  • Dinah Shore as honey tongued Tess Trueheart
  • Bob Hope as the slippery hoodlum Flattop
  • Frank Sinatra as the murderous Shaky
  • Judy Garland as the innocent Snowflake Falls
  • Jimmy Durante as the gravel voiced Mole
  • The Andrews Sisters as the sexy Summer Sisters
  • Jerry Colonna as Tracy’s oft confused Police Chief
  • Frank Morgan (i.e. the Great Oz) as drunk thespian Vitamin Flintheart
  • Cass Daley as gravel voiced Gravel Gertie
  • and Harry Von Zell as the Narrator
  • Directed by Pat Weaver
  • Conducted by Meredith Willson.

The radio program was later released on a record. The album was illustrated with pictures of the members of the cast.

In this story the Summer Sisters were played by the Andrews sisters and so there were three Summer Sisters instead of two as in the comics. The third was named "July" since that was the next month after May and June, the months after which the other two had been named.

Actually the Summers Sisters had been killed off in the strip, but they were brought back for the program. Although several male characters were brought back after they had died in Dick Tracy stories, they didn't ordinarily bring back female characters after they were supposed to be dead.

Smoky Stover's Fabulous Foomobile For Real

A real life version of Smokey Stover's two-wheeled "foomobile" was eventually built. How could they make this seemingly impossible vehicle work? What was it's secret?

Here we see Smokey Stover in his distinctive two-wheeled fire engine, or whatever it is.

It has been called a "Foo Fighter", a name which was used on this big little book.

Real life pilots in World War II claimed to have sighted mysterious "foo fighters" thought at the time to be some sort of experimental aircraft used by the Germans. Here we see the Smokey Stover version on an American B-17.

Eventually, a real life version was built of Smokey Stover's unique vehicle.

This article tells all about the "foomobile".

 Except how it works.

The secret of how this "Foomobile" operated was revealed in another article.

In addition to the "foo" business, Smoky Stover stories featured a cat named "Spooky" and had repeated references to "1506 Nix Nix" and "Notary Sojac".

 Which are shown here-

and there.

THE END!

Dick Tracy Meets Smokey Stover

Smokey Stover was a popular comic strip by Bill Holman. Although Smokey Stover was supposed to be a fireman, few if any of his adventures involved going out and fighting fires. He seemed to be more preoccupied with something called "Foo" and was sometimes called a "Foo Fighter", so that might be what he really thought must be fought, though he spent no more time fighting foo in the strip than he did fire.

And actually this Smokey Stover comic strip just has a picture of Dick Tracy hanging on the wall in one panel, but that's close enough.
