Sheldon Mayer's Scribbly

SCRIBBLY From ALL-AMERICAN COMICS, 1943

"Scribbly" was a semi-autobiographical story in which Sheldon Mayer ( nicknamed "Scribbly" ) depicted himself as a boy cartoonist in a series of fantasy stories originally published in ALL-AMERICAN COMICS, which also featured the "Green Lantern". When a crime wave struck, Ma Hunkel drew inspiration from the Green Lantern* and donned a "Red Tornado" costume to fight crime, later to be joined by her two kids as the "Cyclone Twins".

I always thought these comics were pretty good, although the later "Red Tornado" - an android character who joined the JLA, much like Marvel Comic's "Vision" - somehow failed to equal the magnificence of the Sheldon Mayer version.

* Several characters seem to have drawn inspiration from the Green Lantern in the comics in that period, including "Wildcat" and "Little Boy Blue". Little Boy Blue even referred back to Wildcat having been inspired by Green Lantern, which happened in another story in the same issue of SENSATION COMICS.
