The Men Who Had To Guard Superman

Actually it's Clark Kent who is being guarded, but then, Clark Kent is Superman's secret identity. They just aren't supposed to know that the two are actually one and the same. Art by Wayne Boring.

"The Timid Soul" was a comic strip by H.T. Webster that was being published when this story originally came out, so it can be seen as a topical reference.

The character of Clark Kent was based on Harold Lloyd, a silent movie comedian who played a mild-mannered character whose adventures not infrequently put him in peril.

Which could be seen as being somewhat similar to the timid soul of the comic strip, only Lloyd's character was more likely to do something about situations he found himself in, rather than simply putting up with them.
