Fearless Fosdick Meets The Atom Bum

FEARLESS FOSSDICK was a comic strip within a comic strip. It ran on and off for years in Al Capp's LI'L ABNER as a strip that was read by that character.

FEARLESS FOSDICK was a parody of DICK TRACY, but Fosdick himself was modeled after actor Jack Holt, famous for his movie tough-guy roles.

Today's exciting episode, featuring the Atom Bum,  is from a 1956 reprint book FEARLESS FOSDICK...HIS LIFE AND DEATHS.

Zsa Zsa Gabor In LI'L ABNER

Zsa Zsa Gabor showed up in Al Capp's comic strip LI'L ABNER on Feb. 13, 1953.

Zsa Zsa was shown with an eyepatch in the comic strip because she had recently been photographed with an eyepatch.

Original caption: 1/3/1954-Las Vegas, NV: "Look how unhappy they both look!" Zsa Zsa Gabor laughs as she is handed a United Press Telephoto of the Porfirio Rubirosa and Barbara Hutton wedding shortly after the ceremony on Dec.30 in New York. In her suite in the Hotel Last Frontier the Hungarian beauty sniffed that she was "very, very happy" that Rubirosa got married because now he can pay her the $5,600 hotel bill he owes her. Zsa Zsa has already explained that she's wearing a patch to cover a black eye she says Rubirosa gave her.

Fearless Fosdick Ads

Fearless Fosdick was a parody of Dick Tracy who appeared in Al Capp's comic strip LI'L ABNER. Here are some comic strip ads for Wildroot Cream Oil done with the character.

LONG SAM - Al Capp And Bob Lubbers

And while I was getting CONNIE, I also saw some LONG SAM comics. This was another Al Capp comic strip and was similar to LI'L ABNER, except that the protagonist was a girl who had been raised away from men. About the same mother character was in both strips.

There was some discussion on the Stripper's Guide about the possibility that Frank Frazetta had assisted on this strip without credit. Frank Frazetta was working on LI'L ABNER in this period and could have been working on LONG SAM as well. I don't think the girl in this strip looks like a Frazetta girl, or at least not in the body and legs, although he could have drawn the face or done some of the other characters in the strip.
