Mr. Tawny And Cringer - Battlecat Of He - Man Fame

The talking tiger made the transtition to television along with Captain Marvel in a series of cartoons made by Filmation in the 1970's.

When Filmation began the He- Man cartoons in the 1980's, they reused the character of the talking tiger, just as they reused a number of other elements from earlier cartoons that had been produced by the studio.

"Cringer" was the pet of Adam, as He-Man was called in his secret identity.

Cringer usually appears to be a clumsy, worthless cat,

and also appears to be cowardly,

but when Adam transforms into He-man,

Cringer transforms into the mighty Battle Cat and fights the forces of evil alongside him.

In this version, the tiger undergoes a transformation along with the hero, and the two are superheroes together, which I think is much more satisfying than the situation in the original comic book.

Captain Marvel Meets The Weretiger

I couldn't seem to find Mr. Tawny's origin story on the internet, so this later adventure where he drives a stake through the heart of a hideous weretiger will have to do.

Talking Tigers With Captain Marvel And Nyoka

The tale of two talking tigers, both talking.

The first one was in a Nyoka story published in MASTER COMICS #71, August 1946.

The Nyoka story explains away the tiger's seeming ability to talk at the end. But afterwards the same publisher had a tiger that could really talk in a different comic book.

In "Captain Marvel and the Talking Tiger," from CAPTAIN MARVEL ADVENTURES #79 (December 1947) Captain Marvel readers met Mr. Tawny, a talking tiger who grows tired of the jungle and stows away on a boat to America to see what civilization is like.

Mr. Tawny continued to appear in Captain Marvel comics throughout the original run of the series, and was later revived along with Captain Marvel by DC Comics in the seventies.

There was even a Mr. Tawny comic strip by the makers of the comic book, although in the end this went unpublished.

But of course there had been another famous talking tiger before they had the ones in either Nyoka or Captain Marvel adventures.

That one just wasn't in a comic book.
