Superman Meets Cinderella

This story was originally published in ACTION COMICS in 1943 and it is credited to Jerry Siegel, John Sikela,  and Ed Dobratka.

And it features Lois Lane's little niece Susie, who appeared in a number of Superman stories in this period.

Susie's mother doesn't seem to have ever been depicted in the comics, and Susie herself seems to have been forgotten, apart from periodically being seen in reprints of the old stories.

MY FRIEND IRMA #12

MY FRIEND IRMA was originally a radio show, but there was also a comic book version. "Atlas" was one of the different names used by Marvel comics over the years. This particular comic book was published in November 1951. Dan DeCarlo was the artist on this series. He would later draw JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS, ARCHIE, and numerous other popular favorites.

The inset shows a small picture of Marie Wilson, who played the character on the radio and later movies and television.

Irma lives with her roommate Jane and has a boyfriend named "Al" who calls her "Chicken". Torchy had very similar companions in her comics.

In 1951, the Empire State Building was still the tallest building in the world. Television was still fairly new at the time, which is why there's a reference to people trading back their televisions for radios.

Winning all the prizes was something that they had on the original radio program, which was also something they put in the movie version.

Blackhawk And Torchy From Modern Comics 101

Blackhawk and Torchy stories were both originally published in MODERN COMICS. Here are their adventures from issue #101 in 1950.

Blackhawk's origins went back to the second World War and he originally fought the Nazis. After the war somebody else had to be the bad guy. Not infrequently the bad guy was a brunette villainess of the type Carole Forman used to play in the serials. Carole Forman played the villainess in the Blackhawk serial, of course.

Bill Ward originally drew Torchy, but when he had other comittments, Gil Fox drew the character. This story is by Gil Fox.

In this period, Torchy was given about the same supporting cast as MY FRIEND IRMA had on the radio program, except that the boyfriend who didn't seem to be much good for anything was the other girl's boyfriend. MY FRIEND IRMA was also a comic book in this period.

First Fanny Zilch ( THE BANKER'S DAUGHTER )

The first Fanny Zilch cartoon was THE BANKER'S DAUGHTER, which was made in 1933. The character of Fanny Zilch was originally blonde,

although in the other cartoon which I had on the blog before ( THE SAWMILL MYSTERY ), she  was a brunette.

The character also seems to have been simplified somewhat and looks as if an effort was made to make her less sexy as she is more fully clothed in addition to being less shapely. This parallels what was done with Betty Boop in the later part of the thirties.

The Fanny Zilch cartoons were done as parodies of the old melodramas, something that had been done in silent movies and in comic strips such as HAIRBREADTH HARRY and DESPERATE DESMOND. The same formula was also used in the Betty Boop series, but actually another cartoon had been made with a Betty Boop voiced character ( outside of that series ) that predated Fanny Zilch, PENCIL MANIA.

Eventually Terrytoons would return to the formula in the Mighty Mouse cartoons, with Pearl Pureheart in place of Fanny Zilch, Mighty Mouse in place of Stongheart, and a cat named Oilcan Harry in place of the original villain.

THE FAMOUS FACES OF INDY'S WTTV-4 By Julie Young

Recently I read THE FAMOUS FACES OF INDY'S WTTV-4 by Julie Young. This book tells about local television hosts such as Sammy Terry, Janie, Cowboy Bob, and Peggy.

I read it right after Sammy Terry died, but that was coincidental. I had asked about it in the library and had been placed on a hold list prior to his death.

I thought this was a pretty good book for the most part, although a little obtuse in places ( such as where there is a reference to Annette Funicello as someone who had been on the Mickey Mouse Club and later did peanut butter commercials, without mentioning her name ) and it mentions only criticism of classic films without any corresponding reference to criticism of modern television programs. I am none too keen about modern television programs, myself.
