Superman stories occasionally had hillbillies in them. Hillbillies were popular in popular culture at the time. The comic strip LI'L ABNER ran for years in numerous newspapers and was at the height of it's popularity when this story was originally published in January 1955. The young lady to whom Clark Kent finds himself engaged in this story is similar to LI'L ABNER'S Daisy Mae, while her former fiancé can be seen as being like another version of LI'L ABNER himself.
