JOHNNY REB ( originally called JOHNNY REB AND BILLY YANK ) was a comic strip story set in the Civil War that was run in the papers towards the end of the 1950's. I was reading this January 25, 1959 strip at allthingsger.blogspot.com/ when I noticed something.
"Yancey Dirango" sounds a lot like "Yancy Derringer", which was on television at the time.
Yancey Dirango is also drawn to look like Jock Mahoney as Yancy Derringer. It's not something that everyone would be familiar with today, but when these comics were originally published people would have gotten the reference.
Dale pointed out that the name "Dirango" is a variation of "Durango"; THE DURANGO KID was a b movie series that Jock Mahoney had worked in as a stunt double for star Charles Starett, sometimes working as an actor in the films as well.
Durango Kid comic books were published up until 1955, three years after the film series ended.
Which had been only four years before the Johnny Reb story with "Yancey Dirango" was published.
