"Winnie The Wac" was originally a comic strip drawn by Vic Herman, which was popular during the second World War. A Winnie The Wac collection was published which had a forward by Carole Landis. But today on we have the Owen Fitzgerald version, which was originally published by D.C. comics in 1953.

"The Blonde Bomber" refers to Carole Landis, just as "The Oomph Girl" refers to Ann Sheridan. "Umbriago", another character in this story, takes his name from a song that was sung by Jimmy Durante.

The Blonde Bomber In The Rocket Plane Mystery

"The Blonde Bomber" was a variation  on "The Blonde Bombshell", a term that had originally been applied to Jean Harlow. "The Blonde Bomber" was used as a nickname for Carole Landis, but it was also the name of a comic book character.

This particular story was originally published in ALL-NEW COMICS in 1943.

Rocket planes were common in the comics in this period and there were actually some experimental ones in real life, although jet propelled aircraft would not become common until after the war. 

 

 

 

 

And here we have a rocket to cut out and paste together from SCIENCE COMICS. It looks like the other rockets that they had in that particular comic book, and it also looks something like the rockets they had in the Flash Gordon serials at the time.

Doc Savage And The Blonde Bomber

At the close of the Doc Savage adventure CARGO UNKNOWN, Doc called a girl a "Blonde Bomber".

 That was a term that had been applied to Carole Landis.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Carole Landis was also called "The Ping Girl", a name she said she disliked. She became one of the most popular pin-up girls of World War II and is also remembered for her part in entertaining the troops overseas during wartime.

 

In World War II several bombers were christened "The Blonde Bomber" by their crews. 

 

 

 

 

This Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress  was named "The Blonde Bomber" after the pilot's wife, Mary Francis Phillip.

                                 The similar term "Blonde Bombshell" dates back to Jean Harlow,

 

 

 

and was used for Bill Ward's comic book character "Torchy".

"Blonde Bombshell" is the better known term today.
