Fantomah

Fantomah was the first female superhero to appear in comics. Created by Fletcher Hanks, she appeared to have just about any power she needed to fly, turn evildoers into monsters, and otherwise bring justice to the jungle. I'm not sure if I've had this story on the blog before, but I know that I've read several stories with this character in the past.

From JUNGLE COMICS #7 ( 1940 ).

Bubbo Turk

Bubbo Turk, or, a tale of us kids.

When I was a kid we played "Don't Break The Ice".

We called the little man in the game "Bubbo Turk", but I never remembered why.

I happened to be reading this comic strip on "The Fabulous Fifties" site and I realized that this is where the name came from. Bubbo Turk was one of the characters in this story.

Until he got killed. Anyway, that was where we got the name. They ran this comic strip in the paper here and we used to read it.

Impossible Headlines

This story involves fake headlines being put out by criminals as part of their scheme. But since this is a Superman story, Superman is able to put things right. In real life there is no Superman and it is up to others to point it out when what purports to be a news story isn't real at all. From SUPERMAN #92, September 1954. Johnny Reb Story With Yancy Derringer Character

This JOHNNY REB story from early 1959 has the Jock Mahoney character "Yancey Dirango" in it, who first appears in the fourth episode and then becomes an ongoing character. John Wilkes Booth also appears as a character. This story is set in the Civil War and thus predates Booth's postwar assassination of president Abraham Lincoln.

Johnny Reb And Yancy Derringer

JOHNNY REB  ( originally called JOHNNY REB AND BILLY YANK ) was a comic strip story set in the Civil War that was run in the papers towards the end of the 1950's. I was reading this January 25, 1959 strip at allthingsger.blogspot.com/ when I noticed something.

"Yancey Dirango" sounds a lot like "Yancy Derringer", which was on television at the time.

Yancey Dirango is also drawn to look like Jock Mahoney as Yancy Derringer. It's not something that everyone would be familiar with today, but when these comics were originally published people would have gotten the reference.

Dale pointed out that the name "Dirango" is a variation of "Durango"; THE DURANGO KID was a b movie series that Jock Mahoney had worked in as a stunt double for star Charles Starett, sometimes working as an actor in the films as well.

Durango Kid comic books were published up until 1955, three years after the film series ended.

Which had been only four years before the Johnny Reb story with "Yancey Dirango" was published.

Superman's Lost Identity

This time Superman loses his memory and doesn't remember what his secret identity is. He uses a different identity for a time, eventually using his super-powers to find out what his old identity was. Art by Wayne Boring.
