Clark Kent's Super-Masquerade

Superman is Clark Kent, and Clark Kent is Superman, but sometimes he gets it all confused. Like this time. Art by Wayne Boring.

The "wild-eyed author" in this story reminds me of Leonard Maltin, mainly because it reminds me of a picture of him that I found on the internet a while back.

PANHANDLE PETE AND JENNIFER

The story I put on the blog yesterday was from the first issue of PANHANDLE PETE AND JENNIFER. Here is the cover of the first issue.

Panhandle appears on the cover, but not Jennifer. The implication is that he is bringing her flowers, but the donkey is eating them before he can get them to her.

Text page describes how the comic book was based on the television program and tells who made it.

"Autographed" picture from inside the back cover.

The back cover shows some characters from other stories that were in this issue. They presumably are all characters from the television version.

PANHANDLE PETE AND JENNIFER

J

PANHANDLE PEAT AND JENNIFER was a puppet show which featured Jennifer Holt,

an actress who had appeared in westerns with William Boyd  ( Hopalong Cassidy ), Tex Ritter, and Lash La Rue. The program appears to have been her last screen work.

Jennifer Holt was the daughter of Jack Holt. The character of "Fearless Fosdick" was modeled after Jack Holt, so this is related to a comic strip character that was popular at the time. Jennifer Holt herself became a comic book character when PANHANDLE PETE AND JENNIFER was made into a comic book*.

The dinosaur in this story appears to be the Sinclair dinosaur, which was used in advertising Sinclair gas. It even drinks oil, presumably because it needs to fuel it's firey breath. Gas and oil were considered to be related to dinosaurs because oil came from the decomposition of ancient things.

The Dinsaur also appeared on the television program.

Tim Holt ( brother, and a star of westerns ) was also a comic book character, sometimes appearing as a sort of superhero called "Red Mask". Tim Holt comics were published by Magazine Enterprises between 1948 and 1954.

Gale Allen Minus Her Girl Squadron

Gale Allen and the Girl Squadron were recurring characters in PLANET COMICS. This story doesn't have any of the other girls, teaming her instead with a seemingly worthless individual who in the end turns out to have a great deal of ability at taking credit.

The transparent suits in this story were something that they previously had used in the Flash Gordon comic strip, while "Volta" seems to have come from another series in PLANET, "The Lost World", which had "Volta Men". The underground monsters resemble what they had in the Shaver Mystery, but this story predates that phenomena as it was published in 1943.
