PANHANDLE PETE AND JENNIFER

J

PANHANDLE PEAT AND JENNIFER was a puppet show which featured Jennifer Holt,

an actress who had appeared in westerns with William Boyd  ( Hopalong Cassidy ), Tex Ritter, and Lash La Rue. The program appears to have been her last screen work.

Jennifer Holt was the daughter of Jack Holt. The character of "Fearless Fosdick" was modeled after Jack Holt, so this is related to a comic strip character that was popular at the time. Jennifer Holt herself became a comic book character when PANHANDLE PETE AND JENNIFER was made into a comic book*.

The dinosaur in this story appears to be the Sinclair dinosaur, which was used in advertising Sinclair gas. It even drinks oil, presumably because it needs to fuel it's firey breath. Gas and oil were considered to be related to dinosaurs because oil came from the decomposition of ancient things.

The Dinsaur also appeared on the television program.

Tim Holt ( brother, and a star of westerns ) was also a comic book character, sometimes appearing as a sort of superhero called "Red Mask". Tim Holt comics were published by Magazine Enterprises between 1948 and 1954.

Black Phantom #3 - TIM HOLT #41

Another adventure of the Black Phantom in TIM HOLT, which was about to have the title changed to RED MASK, the masked avenger identity that Tim Holt had been using in these stories.

The "extra-dimension effect" was an attempt to give the art a 3-D look. You see this in some of the other comics at the time, as well as actual 3-D comics that required glasses. The fad was short-lived.

Black Phantom's 2nd appearance - TIM HOLT #38

The Black Phantom didn't return in TIM HOLT comics until several months later. Managing to return at all was something of a miracle, since she seemed to have perished at the end of the first story. But then, things like that frequently happen to the bad guys in comic book stories.

Tim Holt was a real-life movie cowboy, the son of Jack Holt. Here is a then recent picture of him, from inside the front cover.

Black Phantom's First Appearance - TIM HOLT #25

The Black Phantom's first appearance in TIM HOLT #25, Aug-Sept. 1951 . Tim Holt was a movie cowboy in real life and the comic book is supposed to be based on his movies, although they had him being a superhero called "Red Mask". In the beginning, Black Phantom was one of the bad guys - something like a different version of Catwoman. She later got to be a good guy, but then, Catwoman got to be a good guy too.
