"Nightmare" - ADVENTURES INTO WEIRD WORLDS Jan. 1954

I've spent a lot of time in hospitals, and I've had a few nightmares in them. This is the tale of someone else who had a nightmare in the hospital. Art is by Joe Sinnott. Notice that his is the only name on it. This pre-Marvel Marvel ( Atlas ) comic book predates the ones that always have Stan Lee's name on them.

SHOWGIRLS Page By Dan DeCarlo

A Dan DeCarlo page from SHOWGIRLS. SHOWGIRLS was a Marvel ( Atlas at that point ) comic book with all their pretty girl characters together-  Millie The Model, Sherry The Showgirl, Chili, Hazel, and My Girl Pearl. My Girl Pearl was actually their later version of "My Friend Irma" after they no longer called her by that name. Which presumably was to avoid having to pay to use the Irma name.

This story's signed by "Stan and Dan". Stan must have gotten to where he was feeling generous later on - they were only signed "Stan" to begin with.

Sun Girl

Sun Girl was the Human Torch's girl sidekick in the late forties. During the same period Captain America had a girl sidekick called "Golden Girl" and The Submariner had a girl sidekick called "Namora". It was something they were doing in all the superhero comics at Atlas ( Marvel ) comics at the time.

The O'Brine Twins

The O'Brine Twins were a couple of old salts who had a backup feature in Fox's BLUE BEETLE in 1948.

Although it is not stated in the story that the O'Brine twins are sailors, their names are related to water and they both wear little sailor hats and striped shirts ( which used to be associated with sailors ). Otherwise they can be seen as more or less standard comedy figures, like "Woozy Winks" in Plastic man comics.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Again we see the moon identified as a woman.

 

 

 

Venus makes a brief appearance in one panel. This could be considered a sort of crossover, since Marvel ( then Atlas ) Comics had a Venus character in this period.

MY FRIEND IRMA #12

MY FRIEND IRMA was originally a radio show, but there was also a comic book version. "Atlas" was one of the different names used by Marvel comics over the years. This particular comic book was published in November 1951. Dan DeCarlo was the artist on this series. He would later draw JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS, ARCHIE, and numerous other popular favorites.

The inset shows a small picture of Marie Wilson, who played the character on the radio and later movies and television.

 

 

 

 

Irma lives with her roommate Jane and has a boyfriend named "Al" who calls her "Chicken". Torchy had very similar companions in her comics.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 In 1951, the Empire State Building was still the tallest building in the world. Television was still fairly new at the time, which is why there's a reference to people trading back their televisions for radios.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 Winning all the prizes was something that they had on the original radio program, which was also something they put in the movie version.

Captain Marvel And The World Of Too Many Sivanas

Captain Marvel's archenemy Dr. Sivana wins this time. For a little while.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Captain Marvel was similar to Superman in many ways, but his stories seemed to be more of a little kid - type fantasy than those of the Man of Steel.  And rather than simply being a secret identity, Billy Batson appears to be a completely different individual who switches place with Captain Marvel, who shares the powers of various characters from ancient history and mythology, and can be seen as a sort of a guardian angel.

 

The "Hall of Shazam" was where Billy Batson had originally found the old wizard Shazam, who gave him the combined powers of the six ancients. Billy would go there every now and then to contact the old wizard. The implication was that the tunnel had been built by the ancients, although it appeared to be located somewhere in New York city and was ordinarily taken to be a subway tunnel. I don't know how often they had the sign that said "The Hall Of Shazam", but the sign with the first letter of the six names spelling out "Shazam" was a recurring thing in these stories.

 

In this story, we get to see not only the ancient wizard Shazam, but Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury as well. Ordinarily they merely lent Captain Marvel their powers from offstage, rather than participating in the action themselves.
